Introduction & Role of CRPF

The Central Reserve Police Force ( crpf long form) was established as the Crown Representative's Police on the 27th July 1939. It became the Central Reserve Police Force on the promulgation of the CRPF Act on 28th December 1949. It's been 81 years of amazing time.

The Force has evolved into a large organization, with 246 Bns (including 208 executive Bns, 6 Mahila Bns 15 RAF Bns 10 CoBRA Bns, 5, Signal Bns and 1 Special Duty Group, 1 Parliament Duty Group), 43Group Centres 20 Training Institutions, 3 CWS, 7 AWS 3 MWS/SWS four composite hospitals with 100 beds and 18 Composite Hospitals with 50 beds.

The CRPF is All India in character, both in deployment and in its composition. Due to its unique capability to rapidly adapt to different circumstances, and, to work in perfect in perfect harmony together with State Police, CRPF has throughout the years gained the reputation of being perhaps the most acceptable Force by the citizens and the State administrations.

Broad gamut of duties performed by the CRPF are

  1. Control of crowds
  2. Control of the rout
  3. Counter Millitancy/Insurgency operations.
  4. Handling Left Wing Extremism
  5. Overall co-ordination of large scale security arrangement specially with regard election security in areas of conflict.
  6. Protection of VIPs and vital installations.
  7. Monitoring the degradation of the environment and the safeguarding Local Flora and Fauna
  8. Fighting aggression during War time
  9. Participating in UN Peace Keeping Mission
  10. Rescue and Relief operations at the times in Natural Calamities.

Alongside Apart from Law and Order and counter insurgency obligations, the function of CRPF during the General Elections, held repeatedly over the last few years, is significant and vital. It has been especiallytrue for the trouble torn States of J&K, Bihar and States of NorthEast. In the elections for Parliament and State Assembly Election and State Assembly Election, CRPF was a key player with regards to security measures.

7.5 percent of the Force is employed to ensure the safety of VIPs mainly within the North-Eastern States, J&K, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh which include Governors, Chief Ministers, Ministers, MsP and MsLA of J&K Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur as well as Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram. CRPF provides the security (Static guard) at the office of the The Prime Minister of India as well as other MsP and Union Ministers, as well as other dignitaries.

17.5% of the Force is responsible for guarding crucial installations for the Central and State Govts mostly in insurgency affected areas which includes Secretariats Doordarshan Kendras and Secretariats Telephoneexchanges, Banks, Hydroelectric projects, Jails etc. CRPF is also responsible for the security for the security of Parliament House.

10 Coys of CRPF are deployed to ensure the protection of three shrines that are sensitive i.e. Krishna Janma Bhoomi, Shahi Idgah Masjidcomplex (Mathura), Ram Janma Bhoomi- Barbi Masjid complex (Ayodhya) and Kashi Vishwanath Temple- Gyanvapi Mosque(Varanasi). Four Coys of the Force are entrusted with the safety of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, Katra, Jammu (J&K).

Security Activities

Central Reserve Police Force is the largest Central Armed Police Force of India and has an impressive past and an eventful present.The history is replete with innumerable "SAGAs OF BRAVERY" which provide inspiration and principles to the force.Since the beginning of its existence around 1939, the force has been on the move for a long time, from providing assistance to the fusion of the small Princely States into Indian Union and handling of the Partition riots. It is currently engaged in an entire guerrilla conflict in the Maoist zone of conflict. The CRPF has had to fight many tough battles, and stood alongside the Army in times of war. Ten brave soldiers from CRPF were martyred as Chinese troops entered Indian Territory and attacked its patrol at Hot springs (Laddakh) on 21 Oct 1959.Two CRPF companies deployed at Sardar Post in Kutch repulsed an attack by an army brigade from the Pakistan Army on 9th April 1965. The battle of Sardar post is regarded as the most important battle ever to be fought in the history of Police forces. In the front of security inside the country, it thwarted Parliament attack on the 13th of December, 2001 and Ayodhya attack on 27th July 2005.

CRPF was also a key role in curbing militancy in Punjab in the 1980s and the insurgency within Tripura in the 1990s. On the recommendation by the group of Ministers CRPF was designated as the main internal security force in the country. Today, more than a third of the force's resources are used in left-wing extremist regions to combat left-wing extremism. The CRPF played a major role in eradicating the naxalism from West Bengal and from Kaimur and Rohtas regions in Bihar. The naxals were eliminated from Saranda forest area in Jharkhand which was a major base for them. Despite scattered deployment, CRPF neutralized top maoist commander Kishanji in 2011 and made significant incursions into free naxal zones like Saranda ( in 2011),Maad (in 2012) as well as the Cut-off region (in the year 2012), Burha Pahad (in 2012), Silger & Pedia (in 2013).

CRPF also conducted relief and rescue operations in various natural calamities like Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), Gujarat Earthquake (2001), Tsunami (2004) and J&K Earthquake (2005). CRPF has proved it's mettle throughout numerous overseas UNdeployments like Srilanka (1987), Haiti (1995), Kosovo (2000) & Liberia (Women Contingent) (2007) also.
